Megapixel to Gigapixel Digital Cameras With Photo Stitching

In the past, I’ve made attempts to create panorama shots with my megapixel digital camera, but they never really turned out quite right. Finding the proper perspective and overlap points was beyond me. So, I gave up on the idea. None of the photos were anything I’d want to share on Flickr, or even with family and friends.
Recently, I had a project in mind that is well suited to panorama shots, and I recalled an article I read on Slashdot written by Max Lyons. Max took a 1.09 gigapixel shot (40,784 x 26,800 pixels) by stitching together 196 images from a 6 megapixel camera. His shot is magnificent, but took about a week to create, so it was extremely effort intensive. Interestingly, Max is in a sort of quandary with this project, because no commercial printer is available that will do his project justice. Though inspiring, I can really afford to stitch together a single photo over the period of a week, but I found PTgui, a great GUI frontend for Helmut Dersch’s Panarama Tools that even a child could use. It’s $30, but there is a month-long trial available for download.
