Peter Jennings: Getting to the Bottom of the UFO Debate

Peter Jennings UFO

Peter Jennings’ is doing a broadcast on UFOs.

Did you hear that? Peter Jennings’ is doing a broadcast on UFOs.

I respect Jennings. He regularly is a guest on The Daily Show, and he seems to be level-headed with a good sense of humor. But really– UFO’s?

“UFOs — Seeing Is Believing,” airs Feb. 24 from 8 to 10 p.m. is the latest installment of the “Peter Jennings Reporting” series. When you look at what he is attempting to accomplish, a “serious and unbiased look” at a heavily marginalized subject, that is something I can support and respect. Still, the subject of his investigation seems trivial when taking into account the other subjects he might spend time on. Iraq, North Korea, Social Security, the impending energy crisis… these spring to mind.

“When we got to the end, I realized two things. First of all, that many of the people who had these experiences were the very people — police officers, pilots, military personnel and ordinary citizens — who we regard as being trustworthy and, not only that, very valuable to our society because they protect us.”

According to Jennings’ research 80 million Americans claim to have seen a UFO. The numbers support the likelihood of extraterrestrial life somewhere, (100 bill stars x 100 bill galaxies = plenty of chances for random life to spring up.) but the chances they have visited and probed– no numbers on that yet.

Jennings would get a lot more kudos from most Americans if he would provide us with a “serious and unbiased look” at the recent time he spent in Baghdad for the election.

Well, the facts are. As evidence take a look at the following Harris Poll. 44% of Americans believe some of the 9/11 hijackers were Iraqis. 46% believe that Saddam helped plan the attack, and 36% believe that Iraq had WMDs.
