Google Maps vs. TerraServer

Over at Scobleizer, Robert points out something I found very interesting.
He compared Google Map’s image of 1 Microsoft Way to that of TerraServer. At first glance, it looks like TerraServer’s image is clearer and has less distortion. Indeed, TerraServer hands down serves up the better image of MSFT’s campus, However, much more interesting to me was that both images are identical. Look at both images. Compare the car that has just passed through the crosswalk, or the truck that is making a right hand turn at the intersection. Even some white marks on the cul-de-sac are the same.
Does Google (via Keyhole) have inferior data? Does Microsoft have better tools for cleaning up the sat images? Is Google holding back on quality for some business purpose?
