Where do you find the time?

Gina Trapani points out this talk from Clay Shirky where he discusses where people find the time to do things like edit the Wikipedia and maintain blogs. His take: they watch less television. Shirky takes the point of view that we are waking up from the "collective bender" of mindlessly watching sitcoms and instead, we’re choosing instead to spend our free time volunteering, interacting, and Web 2.0′ing online.

I’ll be the first to admit that when it comes to mindlessly watching TV, I am an addict. I enjoy the escape that it offers and some television offerings are really quite well done, if not altogether engrossing. I find that I can stick a television show off to the side in a window while I review my Twitter stream, respond to email, update my to do lists, IM sporadically with friends and–if there is time remaining– get some coding in for work.
