Seattle Traffic on May Day 2008

May 1st, 2008 | by Mike G |

For the last week or so, I have seen banners on Interstate-5 overpasses reading "No Peace. No Work. May Day." I’m not sure if Seattle is tight in the grips of Big Peace–or if the ILWU holds particular sway here in the Emerald City–but driving into the city today was fast and effortless. The place I stop at for coffee, which is normally buzzing with caffeine addicts, was also strangely empty.

Are there really that many downtown workers who decided to protest the war this May 1st? I would love to have done the same, but as a software developer for a large "pre-Internet economy" company, my status of ‘Whore’ is abundantly apparent. Are the people who work in the US job market first world lucky enough to have positions where they can call in to work socially conscious?

UPDATE: Ah, but the time saved during the morning commute may be nullified by the parade scheduled in Downtown Seattle at 4:00 PM.
